The system parameters of the polars MR Ser and ST LMi

We obtain the Na I λ8183,8195 absorption line radial velocity curves for the polars ST LMi and MR Ser, from which we find the semi-amplitudes to be Kabs=329±6 km s −1 and Kabs=289±9 km s −1 respectively. We find that for both systems the effects on the Na I absorption lines due to X-rays heating the inner face of the secondary are negligible, and so the values obtained for Kabs can be taken as ...

Polarimetry of Binary Stars

Astronomical polarimetry is a powerful technique that can provide physical information sometimes difficult or impossible to obtain by any other type of observation. Almost every class of binary star can benefit from polarimetric observations: pre-main-sequence objects, close or contact binaries, mass-transfer systems, evolved binaries, cataclysmic variables, eclipsing binaries, etc. In these sy...

Basics of Sar Polarimetry

Abstract A comprehensive overview of the basic principles of radar polarimetry is presented. The relevant fundamental field equations are first provided. The importance of the propagation and scattering behavior in various frequency bands, the electrodynamic foundations such as Maxwell’s equations, the Helmholtz vector wave equation and especially the fundamental laws of polarization will first...

Aspects of Radar Polarimetry

This contribution is a tutorial introduction to the phenomenological theory of radar polarimetry for the coherent scatter case emphasizing monostatic backscattering and forward scattering (transmission). Characteristic similarities and differences between radar polarimetry and optical polarimetry and the role of linear and antilinear operators (time-reversal) are pointed out and typical polarim...
